I don't think Downes was brought in as a creative midfielder. He is all about breaking up play and keeping it simple. Hopefully a consistent and reliable squad member. He can't be judged on a few minutes anyway.

Lets face it if you are given a rare opportunity to play then you are probably going to at least be competent and not keep giving away the ball or look out of your depth by making mistakes. There is value in players who can come on and make it hard for other teams to score when we are ahead. I don't expect him to be a starter or first name on the team sheet. Still got a lot to learn.

Agreed about Downes. You can see how he got such good passing stats - lots of short, simple passing sideways and backwards but haven't seen anything very dynamic or creative from him. Lanzini was poor too and looks pretty washed up to me. That's why Moyes still wants someone new in there.

Much as it's a very short period to judge on, saw nothing from Downes in that game to suggest he should get ahead of Soucek, Lanzini or Fornals for a CM spot alongside Rice.

Looked a bit slow, not particularly strong, only ever played it backwards. If Fornals is going to play for us long term, CM is really the only spot I can see him competing for...not creative enough for 10. Too makeshift at wide forward. Has reasonable technique and excellent energy, and is tenacious. CM seems the logical spot.

Moyes probably sees that Benrahma is actually a good player and thinks, maybe if i played him in a few more games last season then we wouldn’t have forfeited the last 5 months!

What is it with Moyes and Benny? He picks him, he scores, yet there's no celebration from Moyes, or even a smile. If anything, he looked pissed off.

Scamacca showed some quality with his finish, and with his touches. Cornet, as I've previously said, needs to learn the offside rule. How many fucking times is it now?

As suspected this didn't really tell us much. Good to see Og get 90 mins, no reason why he can't come back as good as before, which in turn leaves us looking very strong in that department.
